Rhamus purshiana
A deciduous tall shrub or small tree. Small greenish-yellow flowers are followed by blue to purplish-black berries. It has been noted that the Cascara is “like an Alder and a Birch with a Cherry thrown in”. An important food and cover source for mule deer, elk, and many birds and small mammals, it is generally found in Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar, Hemlock and Maple in moist sites. Prefers shade.
